IOWA CITY – A new mini-season of softball, an annual cabaret fundraiser, and a car wash bargain fundraiser are coming in September for the Lambda Softball Association (LSA) of Iowa.

And it all tops one of the league’s most successful summer seasons in its eight-year history.

LSA, based in Iowa City, will start its min-fall season Sept. 7. You can register here for the league; all skill levels and experience levels are welcome, from all genders. The league is also doing more to attract spectators, including offering refreshments during its weekly games.

Play takes place every Sunday at Iowa City’s Mercer Park from Sept. 7 to 28,  at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and noon.

“Beyond just the softball itself, it’s an opportunity for players to connect with each other on a level a little deeper for an hour or two on a Sunday,” says league leader Steven Holter.

Cabaret, car wash packages help raise money for LSA

LSA’s annual Cabaret fundraiser is also coming 5:30 p.m. Sat., Sept. 13. The annual evening features dinner and performances and takes place at Caring Hands and More in Iowa City. Proceeds will help pay for an LSA travel team to participate in the Gay World Series at the end of September.

Tickets are $25 to $50 a person or available for group tables. Get yours here.

In addition, the group is selling discount car wash packages to  the Tidal Wave Car Spa in Coralville. The packages offer 50 to 66 percent off of deluxe washes; inquire about getting yours by reaching Holter at steven.lsaiowa@gmail.com.

LSA just had its best summer ever

The September opportunities with LSA come after the league held one of its most successful summer seasons ever:

  • LSA welcomed an entire new team this summer, scheduling games among five teams instead of four.
  • It had 80 players this summer, the greatest number in the league’s even-year history.
  • More than two dozen new players joined the league this past year – the greatest number of newbies in the league’s history.
  • LSA kicked off a successful W+ league, specifically for female and nonbinary or transgender players.
  • The league has the greatest number of traveling teams ever: two teams headed to a tournament in Milwaukee this weekend, one headed to the World Series at the end of September, three teams headed to tournaments in Madison,Wis., and Nashville, Tenn.; and yet another headed to New Orleans in December. “There’s a camaraderie,” Holter says of the traveling teams, which often welcome members from other communities throughout the Midwest.

Holter says the team always welcomes sponsor support, through donations or team sponsorship. All games are played at Mercer Park, 1317 Dover St., Iowa City.
