LGBTQIA+ Roundtable in central Iowa speaks out
More than a dozen LGBTQIA+ organizations in central Iowa are circulating a shared response to changes in civil rights law in the state. The statement calls out recent Iowa government policy queer issues, and calls for the LGBTQ+ community to come together. The organizations also promise to create safe, social spaces for queer people, work with one another, and advocate for queer rights. The statement comes three weeks after Iowa barred local governments from passing local civil rights ordinances that name transgender people among protected classes. Last year, Iowa became the first state to remove gender identity from its civil rights protections, after adding it in 2007. Almost 3 dozen anti-LGBT bills have been introduced to the Iowa legislator so far this year according to One Iowa Action, one of the co-signers of the roundtable statement.Â

Animal Rescue League calls for movement on animal torture bill
A push is on for Iowa senators to take up a bill that would make animal torture a felony, reports KCCI. The Animal Rights League of Iowa has been lobbying state senators to take up the bill that was passed unanimously by the state House in March. KCCI reports that Iowa is the only state where animal torture is not an automatic felony, and also ranks 45th out of 50 for animal protection laws. The bill’s passage has taken on more urgency because of the highly-publicized rescue of a puppy in Des Moines who was found to have several broken bones from multiple episodes of abuse. Her plight demonstrates the need for this bill, say ARL officials.Â
