Champaign County says no data centers for a year

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — Data centers larger than 10,000 square feet won’t be allowed in Champaign County for 12 months after a County Board vote, reports WAND-TV.  Two hours of public comment preceded the vote, and all but three speakers supported the moratorium, including sixth-grader Samuel Tomory, who said, “We need the water, but we do not need AI. We can just have intelligence ourselves, but we don’t need AI as we need our water.” This moratorium isn’t a ban on data centers; the county’s Data Center Activities Task Force will use the next 12 months to draft regulations on future data center projects.
