ADA Birthday BBQ Bash

Saturday BBQ celebrates Americans with Disabilities Act

IOWA CITY — The landmark Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that banned discrimination against people with disabilities is the inspiration for Saturday’s “ADA Birthday BBQ Bash.” The afternoon gathering includes picnic food and activities at the historic Ned Ashton House, 820 Park Rd. The ADA, signed into law in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, also required public spaces to provide accommodations to people with disabilities. “Today, people with and without disabilities are riding the same buses, shopping at the same retail stores, drawing money from the same ATM machines and watching movies in the same theaters… making the world a better place for everyone,” civil rights leader Marca Bristo says on Disability Philanthropy, describing the law’s impact. Saturday’s BBQ is 12:30 to 3 p.m. and is co-hosted by Iowa City’s Parks and Recreation Department, and the Community Inclusion Club, a nonprofit group focused on supporting social opportunities for “people with disabilities and their non-disabled peers.”
