Cuppa Prayer Tuesday at Galena UMC
GALENA — Have some coffee and join in a spiritual discussion Tuesday at one of Galena’s most LGBTQ+ welcoming churches. Galena United Methodist Church (GUMC), a regular presence at the Galena Pride Picnic, hosts Cuppa Prayer at 11 a.m. every Tuesday at the church, 125 S. Bench St. GUMC is known for its historic building where former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant once worshipped. It’s also led by Pastor Jin-Hee Kang, a longtime advocate of inclusive ministry who has also led United Church of Christ parishes in Rock Falls, Waukegan and Winthrop Harbor. Call for class registrations at WomanSpace
ROCKFORD — Fifteen different arts, wellness, spirituality or discussion groups kick off next week at WomanSpace, and the nonprofit is putting out a call for registrants. Most classes are weekly and continue for six to 10 sessions. The nonprofit was founded in 1977 by two members of the School Sisters of St. Francis to provide women a chance to ‘discover their voice, strengthen their capacities and depend their understanding of themselves and their place in the world.” Today, it also welcomes men into its classes and provides options for children and youth, too. Explore Rockford LGBTQ+ history book Tuesday
ROCKFORD — Learn about Rockford’s LGBTQ+ history, and meet the local author who has documented it, in “An Evening with The Author of Forest Yester-Queer” Tuesday. Andrew Mertzenich, a local attorney and also author of “Forest Yester-Queer,” The book and evening feature vignettes including ” a local transgender soldier in the civil war” and “a first-hand account of Rockford’s First Official Pride Parade.” Its title is derived from “Forest City,” the nickname given to Rockford in the mid 1800s because of the forested area of Rock River Valley. The gathering happens from 6:30 to 7:30 on the third floor of the Rockford Main Library, 215 N. Wyman St.
