Human connection isn’t just nice—it’s necessary.
Strong relationships can ease anxiety and depression, help us manage stress, and even add years to our lives.

Research shows social ties help lower blood pressure, increase lifespan, and more.
July was Social Wellness Month, but it’s always a good time to recognize the importance of healthy relationships, strong support systems, and open communication. Social wellness means feeling connected, not isolated—supported, not overwhelmed.
Why Relationships Matter
- Mental health: Having someone to talk to can ease anxiety, reduce depression, and lower stress.
- Physical health: Research shows that people with close social ties have lower blood pressure, stronger immune systems, and longer lifespans.
- Resilience: When life gets hard, trusted friends and loved ones help us bounce back.
- Belonging: Whether it’s family, friends, coworkers, or your community—feeling part of something gives life deeper meaning.
- Healthy habits: Supportive people can motivate you to eat well, stay active, and take care of yourself.
Quality, not quantity
Even if you’re introverted or enjoy your alone time, connection still matters.
Social wellness isn’t about having a big group of friends—it’s about the quality of your relationships.
Are your friendships supportive and kind? Do you have people you trust and can be your true self around? Are you showing up for others in return? Social wellness is a two-way street.
Start with yourself
Take a moment to check in with yourself. Are you feeling connected—or stuck in “busy mode” and letting relationships slide?
Life gets hectic, but making time for the people who matter is worth it. Not sure where to start? It doesn’t have to be complicated”
- Send a text to a friend.
- Say yes to that coffee invite.
- Go for a walk with someone.
- Join a club, volunteer, or attend a local event.
Small steps can lead to meaningful connections.
And remember: Healthy relationships include boundaries. Part of social wellness is knowing when to say no. It’s okay to step back from relationships that drain you. Surround yourself with people who lift you up—not wear you down.
Take time to reconnect. Be present. Appreciate the people in your life—and stay open to building new connections. Social wellness reminds us we don’t have to face life alone.
