Iowa Juneteenth teen essays due April 24

Friday is the deadline to submit essays for Iowa Juneteenth’s High School Essay Contest The contest is for students grades 9 to 11. Essays must cover the questions, “What does freedom mean to you? How has learning about Juneteenth shaped your understanding of freedom, liberty, and responsible citizenship?” They must be 500 to 700 words and include five sources from books, newspapers, magazines or websites on a separate page. Results of the contest will be announced the week of May 15, and award recipients will be recognized at the Iowa Juneteenth Jubilee on June 18. The top three winners will receive a trophy and cash prizes. Submit your essay entry here.

Spayghetti and No-Balls Dinner

'Spayghetti' dinner to benefit Noah's Hope Animal Rescue

SIOUX CITY — Help raise money for a group that removes unwanted litter and finds homes for animals at the Join Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue for a “Spayghetti and No Balls” fundraising dinner on Friday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. The event features cocktails, an unlimited dinner buffet, a cash bar, auction items and adoptable animals. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children, and must be purchased in advance by calling 712-253-8394.  Kids 3 and under are free. Proceeds go to Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue. The dinner is at Celebrations Event Center, 5606 Hamilton Blvd.

Glow Walk funds Heartland Humane Society

OTTUMWA — Light up the night on the third annual Glow Walk to raise money for the Heartland Human Society. Organized by HHS Mission Pawsible and Jimmy Jones Shelter, the event from 6 to 9 p.m. will also include food trucks, live music and entertainment, and family-friendly activities.
