Iowa State Rep. Ken Croken (D-Davenport, below) hosts a film every year to help support two of his favorite nonprofits:Â The Project of the Quad Cities‘ and Clock Inc.‘
Â
This year, Croken’s film of choice is “To Wong Foo: Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.” It’s a legendary comedy featuring the late Patrick Swayze along with Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo traveling cross-country as drag artists.
Â
Â

The trio become stranded in a small conservative town called Snydersville and help transform outlooks. The film today is considered both classic, and outdated, with some criticizing the drag queens portraying themselves more as cross-dressers.
Â
The 1995 film was considered America’s response to the edgier “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” from Australia.
Â
Proceeds support gender-affirming care programs by both organizations. Tickets are $30 apiece; order yours here.
