No corporate donations to politics under proposed bill
SPRINGFIELD — Corporations could not donate to political campaigns or referendums under a bill proposed by State Rep Sharon Chung, D-Bloomington (WGLT.) The bill has little chance of passage because it directly counters the Citizens United vs. FEC U.S. Supreme Court ruling from 2010 that declared limiting corporate spending infringes on their First Amendment rights. Chung said the bill would help restore faith in elected officials. Chung’s bill is supported in concept by the advocacy group Reform for Illinois, which also says the legal barriers to the bill are likely insurmountable. Chung’s bill has not made it to committee. No state has regulated PACs in this way before.
