Together on 2nd now open at former Mary's on 2nd
DAVENPORT — Together on 2nd, the new version of the Quad Cities’ only queer bar, opened its doors without announcement Saturday evening. New owners of the building that housed Mary’s on 2nd for 25 years have been providing detailed updates for weeks of their renovations and administrative progress. Owners said last night’s unannounced “soft opening” was a chance to gather feedback on changes including a new floor, lighting, seating, layout and digital jukebox. Newman’s Nightclub, two doors down, is closed indefinitely for renovations. Hours for Together on 2nd, 832 W. 2nd St., are 4 p.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday, 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays, noon to 2 a.m. Saturdays, and noon to midnight Sundays. New owner Matt Maslowski promises word soon on whether traditions Euchre, Trivia, and Karaoke will return. Learn more about Together on 2nd at its Facebook page.

Justice Network focuses on housing for ex-prisoners
ROCK ISLAND — People newly released from prison would receive rental help and other support, under a bill before the Illinois General Assembly, and Project NOW offers a chance Wednesday to learn about it while enjoying a free lunch. You can register here for the midday event featuring Ahmadou Dramé, head of the Illinois Justice Project and a long-time leader in re-entry services in Cook County. The lunch is a chance to talk about Home for Good legislation, supported by a coalition of 62 housing organizations throughout Illinois. Studies show that 70 percent of people who are jailed were experiencing challenges of homelessness prior to their incarceration. The lunch is 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace City Church, 1925 5th Ave., Rock Island. RSVP at mmcneil@projectnow.org.

At least 10 QC sites join in prescription drug take-back
It’s not too early to begin planning for Saturday’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Rock Island is joining in the effort. The center is joining Quad Cities police and fire stations in East Moline, Milan, Moline, Rock Island and Silvis as a drop-off spot for Take-Back Day, a national effort to reduce the dangers of poison or overdose, and environmental contamination, from leftover or expired prescription drugs. You can bring in human medication, including not just pills but also syrups and patches; pet medication; vitamins; vaping pens (batteries removed); and e-cigarette devices. Tossing expired medication into the garbage or flushing it can taint waterways and soil. Expired medications are also dangerous for children, about 40,000 of whom annually ingest leftover medication and experience a medical episode, says the (FDA). Take-Back Day is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The Martin Luther King Jr. Center is at 630 9th St., Rock Island; find names and addresses here of the police and fire stations throughout the Quad Cities also participating.
