Courts: U of I scholarship for Black students remains
IOWA CITY — A scholarship program created to help Black students seek higher education gets to remain that way, following an Iowa Supreme Court ruling (Higher Ed Dive). The University of Iowa has sought since January 2025 to convert the Ezra Totton scholarship, created in 1996, from a scholarship for Black students seeking to study chemistry to one for students who are the first in their family to seek higher education. The university had repeatedly contended the scholarship may be a violation of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action, or race-based admissions. June’s Iowa Supreme Court ruling reinforces an earlier district court ruling saying the scholarship can remain with its original purpose and does not violate law.
Johnson County mobile food pantry gets new truck
IOWA CITY/CORALVILLE — A mobile food pantry that helps families throughout Johnson County access fresh food received a new truck June 25 (CBS2-Iowa). The Meals on the Move program, run by CommUnity Crisis Services, collaborates with other food pantries to transport fresh food and groceries to an estimated 2,000 residents in need throughout Johnson County, who cannot come to the food pantry itself. North Liberty-Iowa City commuter shuttle starts today
NORTH LIBERTY/IOWA CITY — Starting today, you can catch a bus from North Liberty to Iowa City every morning and evening Monday through Friday. Provided by the private company Express Midwest through the City of North Liberty, the “AM/PM Commute Bus Route 70” is free; city officials also warn that riders who struggle with stairs should instead use Johnson County’s fully-accessible bus, with a $2 fee per ride. Each morning, the shuttle will visit 13 North Liberty stops starting at 6:38 a.m. at the intersection of Centro Way and West Jefferson Street. The route then hits three downtown Iowa City stops between 7:35 and 7:45 a.m. The shuttle returns to four North Liberty stops, wrapping up at the North Liberty Community Center at 8:24 a.m. The nighttime route begins at 4:32 p.m. at the Community Center and hits three North Liberty spots before arriving at the Iowa City locations from 5:10 to 5:20 p.m. The shuttle will then circle back to those 13 North Liberty stops to wrap up by 6:14 p.m. at the intersection of North Front Street and Jaro Way.
