IOWA — Des Moines and Dubuque are leading the way this year for Pride celebrations in Iowa, helping to fill out a Pride Season calendar of at least 70 online or in-person events hosted by an Iowa entity.
Capital City Pride in Des Moines is hosting “30 Days of Pride” covering everything from the arts, to exercise and health, to dance and disco, to thoughtful discussions. Key City Pride in Dubuque has a week of events starting June 19 and is also collaborating with nearby communities in Illinois and Wisconsin. Iowa City Pride, which rescheduled its large annual festival to October, has added several June events, as has the City of Iowa City. In the Quad Cities, The Project of the Quad Cities has stepped forth to offer six events throughout the month.
Among the ever-growing tally of events so far: events geared specifically toward Blacks and People of Color; spiritual events; kink and leather pride events; gatherings to commemorate the Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016; brunches galore, most of them drag-themed; and TONS more drag. You can also find online events focusing on BIPOC Queer Pride, “Lesbians Who Tech,” film and more.
All in all, you’ll find events in Burlington; Cedar Rapids; Council Bluffs and nearby Omaha in Nebraska; Davenport and the Quad-Cities; Des Moines; Dubuque and nearby Galena in Illinois; Iowa City and nearby Solon; Sioux City; and Waterloo.
