For the 5th year in a row, United Action for Youth is hosting PRIDE CON, a youth summit for LGTBTQ+ youth and their parents/caregivers Feb. 23. This summit provides a space where young people can connect with peers, learn about new topics, and receive support.Â
Last year, this event drew 55 youth from around the Corridor. They were bursting with excitement about the opportunity to have a welcoming space to be themselves and to be part of an inclusive community.Â
Topics for breakout sessions this year include bystander intervention, mental health, STI prevention, healthy relationships, and intersectionality. For the past 4 years, the IC Kings and Haus of Eden Queens have offered a performance at the end of the day-long conference, which often morphs into an impromptu dance off.Â
A highlight of last year’s event was when a performer shared about a friend that recently committed suicide. This performer pleaded with the youth to reach out to each other so they didn’t feel alone.
Spontaneously, everyone at the conference got up and formed a giant group hug around the performer. Many were moved to tears. It was the perfect visual representation of how we hope that all youth feel supported — and support one another.
Pride Con is FREE and open to all LGBTQ+ junior high and high school students. Opportunities for parents and caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth will also be available.Â
This event is made possible by a grant from the Johnson County DECAT Board. Iowa City Pride is also a sponsor for this event. Additional sponsors are still needed. Register here!
