Johnson County Jail Iowa

Johnson County Jail size, cost triggers supervisor debate

IOWA CITY — The size and cost of a new Johnson County Jail has one supervisor calling for more options and greater public input (CBS2-Iowa). Overall, a new jail for the eastern Iowa county that includes the University of Iowa has been in consideration for years. It’s a need officials say would relieve a $40,000 monthly cost to transport inmates elsewhere, given the current 35,000-square-foot jail houses only 65 inmates and was originally built to house only 45. The proposed new jail  would be 118,000 square feet and provide 120 beds, numbers that officials say relieve current overcrowding while providing room for future growth. .Supervisor V. Fixmer-Oraiz contended during hearings July 8 and 9 that a smaller jail and greater options for rehabilitation should be considered more fully by the full panel. They’re also calling for more public input. The board of supervisors faces an Aug. 26 deadline to finalize language for a public referendum in November on financing for the jail (KCRG).
